Second Tory with Conflict of Interest.

John Selwyn Gummer, now Lord Deben (funny how political dross floats towards the Lords) as he is now known, rose to fame stuffing a beefburger down his daughter’s throat to prove that he was not a mad cow. Debatable as it now turns out. This was as Agriculture Minister at the height of the BSE debacle. Now Mr. Cameron is to promote him as the Chair of  the Committee on Climate Change despite the definition on their letter heading as ‘independent advisers to the UK Government on tackling and preparing for climate change’.
Mr Gummer heads a consultancy and lobby company, Sancroft, one of whose specialities is advising businesses on how to make money from policies enacted to combat global warming. He also is Chairman of Forewind, a consortium trying to build thousands of turbines in the North Sea’s Dogger Bank. He is also one of those old tories disgraced as the end of Maggie’s reign. I had dealings with him on Fisheries at that time and it is not a happy memory. The phrase “White man speak with forked tongue” comes to mind!

If Mr. Cameron cannot see a glaring conflict of interest both with Gummer and Yeo, I would suggest an urgent appointment at Specsavers!
