If this is the future of electric motoring, count me in

I am not sure how many will want to buy a high performance touring car with just two button and an android tablet on steriods but I like the idea of a solar charging station although I suspect this will only hasten the introduction of road charging. This has not been designed by the motor industry but by the entrepeneur, Elon Musk, that brought us paypal. 265 mile range 0-60mph in 4.4 secs. Recharging time is, well shall we say, best in class. Supercharge mode gives 130mile range in half an hour, whereas standard gives about 60 miles per hour of charge. London to Inverness then will require about 3 hrs of supercharging or 12 hours of standard charging. Perhaps not! The stage coach and horses still sound quicker. Price is eyewatering at best but if re-charging costs are low, life time cost may be quite economical. However for now we can assume that high performance electric motoring is only for the well heeled with an executive jet to transport them any distance more tha 100 miles. Never forget that range is not distance to destination but return distance and that is a quite sobering thought. Until every restaurant, pub or office have quick charging facilities available, the limitations of these vehicles renders them little more than a vanity project. Even when that day comes, off-site charging will be at a premium price and that will negate many of the benefits of running costs. Mr. Cameron is parrotting EU dogma on wind, electric cars and smart meters as though this will solve the practicallity. Sorry Cameron, stop listening to imbecile advisors and the twats at the DECC. Start to act your age and not your shoe size!

New Renault Zoe launched. Price £13650 (after government allowance?) plus £70 per month to lease the battery. Range is 60 to 80 miles so don’t vist anything further than 30 miles away. (and don’t turn the heater or demister on!) As Ullapool is fifty miles away, for us, this would be as much use as a catflap on a submarine. As a city car it has it’s possibilities, but in the depths of winter I would not want to be stuck in a traffic jam. As someone doing that sort of mileage in modern small cars that can do 68mpg, the hire costs of the battery plus charging costs do not make this a cheap to run car.

Now we have the Tesla X, an SUV concept that is as exciting as interesting.

About Dougal Quixote

Slightly mad. Always believes a cup is half full so continues to tilt at Wind Turbines and the politicians that seem to believe it is their god given right to ruin Scotland for a pot of fool's gold.
