Wind turbine blades are composites and all composites embrittle with age and sunlight. It has been suggested that we will soon have a mountain of 250,000 tons of redundant turbine blades which cannot be recycled and EU law prevents burial. So what is the life of a turbine blade. The answer is variable depending on stress, usage and degradation. So what happens when they fail. Well they found out in may in Halifax. Just read the story and watch the video. And they still insist it is safe to build these in school grounds. Bear in mind that those in schools tend to be smaller, the blades much faster and the likelihood of failure considerably greater. It is suggested that twice a year maintenance is sufficient. A car that passes an MOT is fine as it drives out of te garage but no one will guarantee it won’t break down 100 yds up the road. In fact they often do!
