Not what you may think. The legacy of Fukushima is a panic reaction against nuclear which resulted in Germany exiting the nuclear market and the Scottish Government, with their friends in CND, moving even further away from nuclear both at Faslane, where thousands of Scots are employed, and in our electricity generating industry. The fact is that Fukushima was a result of a freak occurrence that would be extremely unlikely in Europe Japan is at the junction of four tectonic plates and seismic activity is the norm. That this old power station was found wanting due to mistakes in positioning the backup generation, which would hopefully not happen today. However, the impact on the workforce has been vastly overstated. World Health Organisation figures suggest the incidence of cancer in those workers who attended the incidence will be little more than the normal background levels. Empirically speaking, the health effects of the Fukushima radiation will be too small to measure. This should not stop us looking forward. Modern reactors are safe. New technologies reduce/eradicate the risks of meltdown and radiation and even reduce the waste. Fusion reaction is possible within our lifetime. What we need is to move forward, not look back. Unfortunately, as we have seen in Sussex recently, the green mafia is alive and well. We can expect a great deal of well financed opposition to any nuclear power stations in the UK which will delay implementation through the planning system and by direct action. What Fukushima has actually created is the nuclear winter. The stagnation of energy policy, the false prophets of wind, wave and tide. The real probability that the lights will go out with a reliance on small scale diesel generation and a blind belief in Smart Meters as the only backstop. The chattering classes must stop their inane babble and a modern progressive application of economically sustainable energy solutions must become the mantra for all. Extend the life of existing power provision until alternative 24/7 capacity is available. The truth is that energy is demand led so wind and water will never provide the base load. An oft ignored fact is that hydro is only available 30% of the year. Gas generation and shale gas is deliverable and the US says it will be exporting shale gas very shortly. Engineering must lead, not corporate egos. Greentards must be kept in check. The first move would be a purge of all government departments and committees such as the DECC and DoE of WWF and FoE acolytes. These so called charitable bodies are no more environmentalists but political activists with a left wing agenda.
Do I think we stand a chance? Not a hope in hell! Trimming the wicks of my oil lamps as I speak.
