Wind V. Coal
Quote of the Decade
"The trouble with wind farms is that they have a very large spatial footprint for a piddling little bit of electricity. You would need 8oo turbines to produce the output of a coal-fired power station."
Sir Martin Holgate, Chief Scientist at the Department of the Environment of the British Government - October 2004

On Solar, I have an interesting tale! One of our friends and neighbours has a solar array. Last month they went away for three weeks and we had a power cut. Because all wind and solar have trip switches that mean no power generated from the solar or wind can go back down the line and electrocute the engineers repairing the fault, these have to be reset manually. In Europe they have automatic versions but they cannot be used in the UK. Well we had a power cut, it tripped their switches which cut off all the power to the house. They came back to find the freezers(2) all thawed out and all the food they have so carefully frozen this summer; they have a big veggy plot; ruined! Hey folks. The disadvantage of solar that no one tells you about. All those FITs wasted and more to the point all that effort in growing, picking and freezing down the pan! Perhaps the moral is to disconnect the PV array before you go on holiday but then you won’t be saving any money for the six(?) weeks you are away each year. Ever noticed how we go on holiday but every civil/public servant goes on leave?
