Wind Turbines are supposed to save CO2

deicing wind turbines

The energy required for a helicopter to de-ice all the blades on a wind farm must outweigh any supposed saving in CO² by a factor of 100 or more. Notwithstanding that no wind farm has saved a gram of CO² due to construction and the necessary spinning reserve.

The entire rational for wind turbines is to stop global warming by reducing the amount of Co2 being returned to the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels.

In the attached picture, recently taken in Sweden, freezing cold weather has caused the rotor blades of a wind turbine to ice up bringing the blades to a complete stop.

To fix the “problem” a helicopter is employed (burning aviation fuel) to spray hot water (which is heated in the frigid temperatures using a truck equipped with a 260 kW oil burner) on the blades of the turbine to de-ice them.

The aviation fuel, the diesel for the truck, and the oil burned to heat the water, could produce more electricity (at the right time to meet demand) than the unfrozen wind turbine could ever produce.

The attached picture is a metaphor of the complete insanity of the climate change debate.

In decades to come this one photo alone with sum up an era of stupidity, when rational thought, logic and commonsense was abandoned and immense wealth and resources needlessly sacrificed.

About Dougal Quixote

Slightly mad. Always believes a cup is half full so continues to tilt at Wind Turbines and the politicians that seem to believe it is their god given right to ruin Scotland for a pot of fool's gold.

Reblogged this on Climatism and commented:
And to think for every industrial wind turbine that is erected, a fossil fuel powered backup station needs to be built to provide reliable 24/7 baseload power when the wind don’t blow!

What an insane and devastating joke the entire ‘green’ energy revolution has become.

We will look back at this age of collective eco-insanity and wonder what on earth were we (they) thinking.

  2. Al Pikop says:

Plants recycle CO2 making grain and grass used to make food for us. The greater concentration of CO2 in a corn field increases grain yields to provide us nourishment. We eat the grains and meat and convert it to muscle and bs which in turn is used for producing more food for us to eat.. On and on. Mother nature has a capacity to balance some of Man’s screw ups.
Sulfur when emitted from coal likewise increases plant growth .We add sulfur to all of our fertilizer to increase crop production
Go figure. Between coal and oil being used, we now have more grain to feed the world.
God created one excellent system. Quit the foolishness. Plant trees and raise food. They emit oxygen for us to breathe.
Enjoy life. It is a gift.

    Hoo boy, where to start.

First of all, let’s go to the original: (Google Translate link for you: )

So, first of all, it’s in Norway, not Sweden.

Secondly, icing doesn’t stop the turbine from working, it only slows it down, making it less efficient. The de-icing is done as a safety measure, to prevent chunks of ice from falling off in an uncontrolled manner and hurting someone.

Third, This is an emergency measure, not a regular occurrence. And there are other, more efficient and easier to use systems, this one is meant only for cases and places where de-icing was not considered and built-in beforehand.

Fourth, turbines of this size produce 1.5 MEGAWATTS of power. So (according to the article itself) the price tag to deice a wind turbine is […] equivalent of two days’ turbine production. TWO DAYS.

Of course, it doesn’t matter one whit what I say, as you are not going to listen.

    • No one ever suggested this is a daily feature. It does question why de-icing is not done at manufacture and that is down to cost saving. It is posted as an amusement rather than a comment on the dastardly wind developers. It has been pointed out that it takes 1.5hrs to de-ice and two days production to pay for. Only problem is that when we have high levels of snow more often than not we get little wind so we must assume that this is done not to get the turbine working again but to remove the weight from the blades to prevent permanent damage. Shoots a wee hole in your argument cost v. return but raises ongoing concerns as to the viability of ever larger turbines especially in such areas as Scandinavia, Norway or Sweden.

  5. I don’t always believe Wikipedia, but I do agree with the definition of CO2. It says that it is a gas 1carbon molecule and 2 oxygen molecules together that are vital to sustaining life on earth. If you look at a map in the earth in the fifties compared to today, you will see that there is more green today than then. This does not mean the world is getting warmer, it just simply means we have more air to breathe. But I do agree with the article about more co2 being produced by the helicopter than by burning fossil fuel. Kind of like unto taking a pill because another pill made you sick.
